Revitalizing Urban Spaces and Communities
The Wharf (Washington, D.C.)
The Wharf redefined Washington, D.C.’s forgotten waterfront into a mixed-use cultural and recreational hub. It stands as a model for how urban redevelopment can reconnect people with nature and public space.

Site Description
Stretching along the Potomac River, the 24-acre Wharf district features promenades, parks, piers, entertainment venues, and sustainable architecture. Formerly dominated by parking lots and warehouses, it was redeveloped between 2017 and 2022 through a public-private partnership.

Community Effect
The project revitalized D.C.’s Southwest waterfront, transforming it into a lively social destination with concerts, markets, and outdoor events. By prioritizing public access and cultural engagement, it created a space where diverse communities interact freely.
Elements of The Wharf
The Wharf demonstrates how thoughtful urban design can foster social connection while supporting economic vitality. Re:space applies these principles to ensure the embankment remains active, equitable, and environmentally responsible throughout every season.
